Endoscopic Spine Surgery Enables 19-Year-Old to Walk Within Hours After Keyhole Procedure in Thane

Endoscopic Spine Surgery by Dr Jayesh Bhanushali

Thane: A 19-year-old teenager who had become nearly immobile due to severe slipped disc pain has made a remarkable recovery following Endoscopic Spine Surgery (Endoscopic Discectomy) at KIMS Hospital, Thane.

The minimally invasive Endoscopic Spine Surgery was performed by Dr Jayesh Bhanushali, Consultant – Spine Surgery, enabling the patient to stand and walk within two hours and return home within 24 hours.

The patient had been experiencing worsening leg pain for several weeks before undergoing Endoscopic Spine Surgery.

The procedure involved removing the damaged disc that was pressing on a nerve, without the need for traditional open surgery. This keyhole approach ensured minimal tissue disruption and significantly faster recovery.

Just weeks earlier, the teenager had been leading an active and independent life. However, sudden onset of severe pain radiating down his leg quickly escalated from mild discomfort to unbearable agony.

The condition left him unable to stand, walk, or sit comfortably. Despite medication and rest, his symptoms worsened, impacting both his physical health and emotional well-being.

Following a detailed medical evaluation, doctors diagnosed a herniated disc—commonly known as a slipped disc—where the cushioning disc between spinal bones compresses nearby nerves.

Given the severity of symptoms and the patient’s young age, the medical team recommended Endoscopic Spine Surgery as a modern, minimally invasive solution.

Endoscopic Spine Surgery Performed Using Tiny Incision of Less Than One Centimetre

A thin camera, known as an endoscope, was used to visualise the affected area precisely.

Surgeons were able to remove only the damaged portion of the disc while preserving surrounding muscles and tissues, ensuring a targeted and efficient treatment.

The results of the Endoscopic Spine Surgery were immediate and significant. Within two hours of the procedure, the teenager was able to stand and walk comfortably – an outcome that had seemed impossible just days earlier. His pain reduced drastically, and he was discharged within 24 hours, marking a rapid and successful recovery.

Explaining the advantages of Endoscopic Spine Surgery, Dr Jayesh Bhanushali, Consultant – Spine Surgery, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said, “Endoscopic Spine Surgery is a major advancement because it causes minimal damage to muscles and tissues. Patients experience less pain, recover faster, and can return to their normal routine much earlier compared to traditional open spine surgery.”

The Orthopedic Spine Team, including Dr Amogh Zawar, Consultant Spine Surgeon, highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and timely intervention.

According to the team, opting for Endoscopic Spine Surgery at the right stage can prevent long-term complications and significantly improve patient outcomes.

Unlike conventional spine surgery, which involves larger incisions and extended recovery periods, Endoscopic Spine Surgery preserves the natural structure of the spine, reduces the risk of complications, and enables faster mobility and healing.

For the patient and his family, the transformation has been life-changing. From being unable to walk due to constant pain to regaining mobility within hours, the teenager has regained independence and confidence.

Doctors emphasised that early diagnosis and timely treatment using advanced techniques such as Endoscopic Spine Surgery can help patients avoid prolonged disability and return to normal life more quickly.

This case underscores the growing role of minimally invasive spine procedures in delivering faster, safer, and more effective outcomes for patients.
